This season of Justified was never about the Crowes. It was never really about Raylan confronting his own worst impulses, and it definitely wasn’t about Ava navigating a quixotic path to become a prison gang leader. It was sort of about Boyd having a go as an entirely self-employed outlaw, but only
The A.V. Club outlines why this season was probably the weakest so far, and having finally seen the finale, I agree. LOL at the moron who tried to convince me before the season began that focusing on the Crowes was a good idea. Dewey barely participated in his own family plot, and Daryl turned out to be the biggest joke of a Big Bad the show’s ever seen. That guy wasn’t fit to carry water for a Mags Bennett or a Robert Quarles, and the only thing surprising about him was that it took 13 episodes for someone to get him. The idea that Boyd didn’t just execute him along with Johnny when they were all in Mexico is ridiculous, and clearly just one of many plot contrivances to get the story to where it wound up in the last couple of minutes of the season.
However, I will say that Raylan v. Boyd for the final season could be amazing. Here’s hoping.
